Background of the Study:
Traditional birth attendants (TBAs) have long been the cornerstone of maternal healthcare in rural communities of Ovia North East Local Government. Rooted in indigenous knowledge and practices, TBAs provide culturally sensitive care, often in areas where modern healthcare facilities are scarce (Akanbi, 2023). Their role extends beyond childbirth assistance to include counseling, postpartum care, and the preservation of community health traditions (Dada, 2024). Despite advances in modern medical practices, TBAs continue to be integral in bridging healthcare gaps, particularly among marginalized groups. However, issues such as inadequate training, limited access to emergency care, and skepticism from the modern healthcare system challenge their effectiveness (Ejiogu, 2025). This study examines the socio-economic contributions of TBAs, assessing their impact on maternal and child health, community economic stability, and the preservation of indigenous healthcare practices in rural Edo State.
Statement of the Problem:
Traditional birth attendants in Ovia North East face challenges from modern healthcare interventions, regulatory constraints, and resource limitations. These challenges not only affect the quality of maternal care but also undermine the socio-economic contributions TBAs make to rural communities. This study investigates these challenges to assess the overall impact on community health and economic well-being (Akanbi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the socio-economic contributions of traditional birth attendants.
To identify challenges that hinder effective maternal care by TBAs.
To propose strategies for enhancing the role of TBAs in rural healthcare.
Research Questions:
What is the socio-economic impact of traditional birth attendants in rural communities?
What challenges impede the effective functioning of TBAs?
How can TBAs be better integrated into the modern healthcare system?
Research Hypotheses:
Traditional birth attendants significantly contribute to rural socio-economic stability.
Resource limitations and regulatory challenges negatively affect TBAs’ performance.
Integrative healthcare models can improve the efficacy of traditional birth attendants.
Significance of the Study:
This study underscores the vital role of traditional birth attendants in rural healthcare and socio-economic development. Its insights will inform policies aimed at integrating TBAs into the broader health system while preserving indigenous practices (Akanbi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to rural communities in Ovia North East Local Government, Edo State, focusing solely on the socio-economic impact of traditional birth attendants. Limitations include potential sampling bias and reliance on qualitative interviews.
Definitions of Terms:
Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs): Indigenous practitioners who assist in childbirth and provide maternal care.
Socio-economic Impact: The effect of an activity on the social and economic well-being of a community.
Maternal Healthcare: Services provided to ensure the health of mothers and infants during and after pregnancy.
